Jones Watson opened a cabinet-making business in Chapel Hill in 1833, owned a drugstore in the late 1840s, and lost his mercantile business shortly after the Civil War. He became a lawyer in 1868 and was elected to the NC General Assembly (1872-74) and as mayor of Chapel Hill (1882-83) (Vickers 38, 84, 100).
